    Belvidere School, Shrewsbury

This “Outstanding” Offsted inspected 820 pupil Technology College in the Shropshire County Town of Shrewsbury, required a much- needed refurbishment of its production kitchen in the summer of 2018 when the existing catering facility required upgrading following the removal of asbestos within the ceiling areas.

The existing facility was completely ‘gutted’ and the equipment “footprint” was reduced whilst still accommodating the existing equipment and allowing further expansion.

The reinstatement of the kitchen required a new extraction system with supply air, service distribution unit to accept existing cabling, integral canopy lighting and gas interlock with plant positioned on the adjacent roof utilising existing apertures.  Future proofing of the system was also a client requirement and our design team made provision for a tempered air solution, served by school hot water heating system, and allowed for the further integration of odour control equipment.

The implementation of the system took place with the complete consultation of our project partners in kitchen design, building works, electrical and gas engineering and the Schools own project coordinator; and the total installation was carried out by our dedicated installation team – on time and on budget – during the school’s summer holidays.

When further demand required, at short notice, an upgrade to existing Hot Cupboards, our partners at Swift Maintenance Services were on hand to turn around dedicated, bespoke units tailored to suit the existing modular worktops.

This busy college at the heart of the City of Worcester required extensive alterations to the ‘dated’ Servery and refectory areas, to create a modern feel for its many daily users.

The College also operates a Dining facility at Spires Restaurant, which gives students the opportunity to participate within a real working environment, preparing and serving good quality food and drink to customers. The production kitchen serving this area also needed a vital upgrade.

Both kitchens were completely stripped out for this purpose, which required the safe removal and disposal of the existing systems. Also the setting aside, in part of reusable equipment, which was to be reinstated at the client’s request.

Our experienced project management team were on hand to oversee proceedings from strip out to commissioning.

The View (the former refectory) benefitting from the installation of a bespoke island canopy c/w extract system, service spine, fully integral lighting and dedicated supply air system. The supply air system incorporated a ‘tempered’ facility, which was provided via a Low Pressure Hot Water Matrix within the fully insulated ductwork, with integration to the BMS Controls. All pipework, valves and connections being configured to utilise the college heating system.  The extract system discharged at high level through the roof of the building and included additional connections to the BMS.

The system serving ‘Spires’ production kitchen required the removal and safe disposal of 4 redundant units, along with the supply and installation of 2 new island canopies. Due to the building constraints the existing ductwork was reused in part; but then only after thorough inspection and cleaning / modifications had been carried out by our skilled fitters, which included the addition of fully serviceable access panels installed in accordance with TR/19 HVCA.

Both systems were fully commissioned with the assistance of our gas installation engineers and client appointed electrical contractor.

As a further indication of our continued customer service a full clean of all systems was carried out during the next scheduled maintenance period.
